This special issue aims to emphasize on the critical connection between spatial planning and urban and regional policies within Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and the wider region. In this context, the issue investigates the role of the public sector in the transformation of regional economies. Papers shall also explore how private and non-governmental entities navigate the complex relation of economic, social, and environmental factors to foster resilient development and equitable growth across diverse CEE regions. Emphasizing the significance of knowledge dissemination and innovation, the special issue aims at analysing how insights from research and practice networks contribute policy formulation and implementation, consequently enhancing the effectiveness of spatial planning initiatives.

We welcome submissions from researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and young academics to contribute abstracts exploring spatial planning and management within the Central and Eastern European (CEE) and wider regional context. Potential areas of contributions include, but are not limited to, the following research inquiries:

  • How can the public sector effectively balance economic development goals with social and environmental considerations in spatial planning efforts?
  • What are some potential strategies employed by CEE countries in supporting innovation to catalyse economic transformation at the regional level?
  • How can human capital development and empowerment contribute to more resilient regional economies?
  • What are the key challenges and opportunities for enhancing regional cooperation particularly in the CEE countries?
  • How can integrated territorial development approaches be designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities of specific territories within the CEE region?
  • What mechanisms exist for fostering cooperation to promote resilient development and territorial cohesion both within and beyond the CEE region?

Journal information

European Journal of Spatial Development (EJSD) is an open access journal providing high-quality scientific contributions to spatial planning, regional development, policy making and governance, from European and EU-related perspectives.

EJSD serves as a platform for critical academics and spatial development professionals to share cutting edge research. It publishes original contributions focusing on the multiple ways in which spatial development is coordinated, governed, and institutionalised at various scales, places and territories.

The journal is located within the subject area of Social Sciences, and predominantly linked to the subject categories of Spatial Planning and Development, Urban Studies, and Geography. Nonetheless, based on the journal’s multidisciplinary outlook, EJSD welcomes contributions from other fields if they explicitly contribute to research on European spatial development.

EJSD shares the vision expressed in the Berlin Declaration on “Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities”. EJSD signed the Declaration on 2024/02/29.
